The Role of Commercial Law in Preventing Product Fraud on E-Commerce Platforms: A Case Study of Lazada Indonesia

This study examines the role of commercial law in combating product fraud on e-commerce platforms, focusing on a case study of the Lazada application. E-commerce as a form of digital commerce has experienced rapid growth in Indonesia, but also presents new challenges, especially in terms of consumer protection. This study uses a normative legal method by examining applicable regulations, such as the Consumer Protection Law and the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (UU ITE), and evaluating the effectiveness of their implementation in the context of product fraud cases. The results of the study show that although regulations are available, their implementation and supervision are still weak. Common fraud modes include sending fake products, misleading descriptions, fictitious stores, and review manipulation. Weaknesses in the seller verification system and unclear refund policies worsen consumer protection conditions. To address these challenges, the study recommends strengthening regulations that are adaptive to the development of e-commerce, implementing an escrow system, improving seller supervision and verification mechanisms, and providing more responsive complaint services. In addition, legal education for consumers and business actors and collaboration between the government, e-commerce platforms, and the community are essential to creating a safe, transparent, and fair digital trade ecosystem. This research is expected to be a reference in the formation of more effective consumer protection policies in the digital era.
