This research aims to examine the practices of care and implementation of the Karapan Sapi cultural attraction in Sampang Regency and to analyze the views of Islamic community leaders regarding its relevance to the principles of animal welfare in Islamic ecology. This study employs a qualitative method with a normative-sociological approach. Primary data were collected through interviews with religious scholars, the chairman of Tanfidziyah PCNU Sampang, Islamic boarding school leaders, cultural experts, and Karapan Sapi owners in Sampang Regency. Secondary data were obtained from relevant literature and official documents. The findings reveal that the treatment of racing cattle generally involves attentive care, including nutritious feeding, herbal supplements, and health maintenance. However, during the races, some practices involving violence such as whipping, the use of balm, and sharp tools causing injuries are still observed. Based on interviews, two main perspectives emerged among Islamic community leaders. Some believe that the treatment of cattle already reflects animal welfare values, as the animals are well cared for before and after competitions. Others argue that the Karapan Sapi event still contradicts Islamic ecological ethics due to ongoing acts of cruelty toward animals. In general, Islamic community leaders view Karapan Sapi as a vital part of Madurese cultural identity that should be preserved, provided it aligns with Islamic values, particularly those related to compassion and animal welfare. This research concludes that cultural preservation can coexist with Islamic ecological principles by emphasizing ihsan (benevolence), khilafah (ecological responsibility), and maintaining balance between human needs and the welfare of Allah’s creatures.
