The interpretation of the Qur'an on social issues, including polygamy, has undergone significant development through contemporary hermeneutical approaches. Amina Wadud, a feminist Muslim scholar, offers a method of interpretation based on a gender justice perspective that challenges traditional readings of polygamous verses. In her work, Wadud uses an integrative hermeneutic approach—combining linguistic, historical-contextual analysis, and ethical principles of the Qur'an such as justice and equality. She emphasizes that polygamy in the Qur'an (QS. An-Nisa: 3) is not a command, but rather a contextual response to certain social situations, especially in protecting orphans and widows after the war. Wadud highlights that the conditions of justice that are prerequisites for polygamy are almost impossible to fulfill, so that the Qur'an implicitly encourages monogamy as the ideal form of marital relations. Through this approach, Wadud reconstructs the understanding of polygamy as a practice that is not obligatory, not absolutely recommended, and must be reviewed within the framework of substantive justice. This study shows the importance of gender justice-based interpretation methods in actualizing the universal messages of the Qur'an contextually.
